INTRODUCTION
The Caribbean is undoubtedly a region of the world prone to hurricanes. They are one of the most serious natural threats to island communities. The Dominican Republic, located in the central part of the Caribbean, lies within the hurricane belt. However, if we look at the terrain and trace the path hurricanes have taken over the years, it turns out that the Dominican Republic is the safest place in the Caribbean.
This is mainly due to the island’s geographical characteristics. Not everyone flying to the Dominican Republic knows that its highest peak reaches 3078 meters above sea level. The entire Dominican Republic has several mountain ranges where temperatures can drop to as low as -7°C. These regions generate cold air masses. They push hurricanes north towards Florida and south towards Mexico, Nicaragua, and Honduras. The Dominican Republic serves as a kind of crossroads for approaching hurricanes, storms, and tropical depressions.
WHAT ARE HURRICANES AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Hurricanes form where hot and humid air masses from equatorial regions over the Atlantic Ocean meet cold air from the North American continent. This situation favors the formation of low-pressure systems over the ocean. The greater the temperature differences, the lower the pressure in the ‘eye’ of such a low-pressure system. This factor determines the speed at which air masses move in the ‘eye,’ and thus the wind strength. If wind speeds exceed 120 km/h, we are already talking about a hurricane. This is a Category 1 hurricane on a 5-point scale. The strongest hurricane recorded in the Caribbean region was Allen in 1980. It was a Category 5 hurricane and reached speeds of 305 km/h.

FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE
Meteorological phenomena such as tropical storms, hurricanes, and cyclones in the Atlantic typically occur between June and October. However, their peak activity is in September. The second peak is in October. On average, 14 tropical storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 Category 3 or higher hurricanes occur across the Atlantic each year. Overall activity increases in early August and ends in December.

HISTORY OF HURRICANES IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
To discuss hurricanes in the Dominican Republic, we should review recent years as a basis for our discussion. Throughout the year, we receive a lot of information and alerts on this topic. It turns out that not all threats reach the Dominican Republic. This is what interests us. The complexity of the topic is enormous. The trajectory of hurricanes depends on many factors. Their number varies each year. For example, 2023 was much calmer than 2022. It concluded with 6 hurricanes, 3 storms, and 3 tropical depressions that caused damage.

If we analyze the history since 1851, the Dominican Republic has been hit by 6 hurricanes, including 4 Category 3 hurricanes and two Category 4 hurricanes, out of 46 all registered meteorological threats. Let’s look at the last 18 years. During this time, 101 of the aforementioned meteorological phenomena occurred in the Atlantic. This confirms what we wrote above: the Dominican Republic is relatively the safest place in the Caribbean.

Both graphics are further proof that the Dominican Republic’s location is much better than that of other Caribbean islands.

WHY DO HURRICANES BYPASS THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC?
The first natural line of defense against tropical storms, storms, and hurricanes is the proximity of two larger islands. Hispaniola, where the Dominican Republic is located, lies between Puerto Rico to the east and Cuba to the west. The Mona Passage, which separates the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, is a narrow strait connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Caribbean Sea. It provides a natural barrier against storms. Strong currents occur there, and a high-pressure system usually pushes storm areas out of this region. It is not without reason that this is one of the most challenging areas for sailing in the Caribbean.
The second natural protection for the Dominican Republic is the country’s coastline. It helps reduce wave intensity. On the northern coast, there are shallow coral reefs that drop sharply into the ocean, forming natural walls. Studies have shown that reefs can weaken waves reaching the shore by as much as 97%.
The last and very important factor is the mountain ranges in the Dominican Republic. Hispaniola is home to the highest peak in the Caribbean – Pico Duarte. In the mountains, the air temperature is significantly lower than on the coast. This creates pressure systems that repel hurricanes and reduce their intensity. As I wrote in the previous paragraph, hurricanes need warm air to gain strength. Hence, cold air masses neutralize their effects.
