The problem starts when you plan to stay for 3-6 months—spending the winter in Bávaro, Bayahibe, or Punta Cana, renting an apartment, driving a car, and living normally on-site, often working remotely.

In such a scenario, insurance stops being a formality and becomes an almost mandatory monthly expense—alongside rent, electricity, and internet. And here it’s worth stating clearly: EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) does not work in the Dominican Republic. Every visit to a private clinic, tests, X-rays, or hospitalization are paid out of pocket. And local prices can surprise you more than the illness itself.

For a longer stay, you have two insurance protection options that make sense in Dominican conditions. Each has its pros, cons, and costs.

Polish Travel Insurance – Classic Solution for a Longer Stay

The simplest and most frequently chosen option when traveling to the Dominican Republic is classic Polish travel insurance. It also works well for a longer stay, provided the policy allows a single trip lasting several months.

The cost of such insurance is typically around 6-12 PLN per day, depending on the coverage amount, scope of protection, and additional options. A major advantage is the high medical expense limits and often included medical transport or repatriation to Poland, which in the Dominican Republic means huge savings in case of a more serious health problem.

The downside is the price, which increases with each additional day of stay, and the fact that some insurance companies impose a limit on the maximum length of a single trip. This must be carefully checked in the general terms and conditions before purchase. For cost orientation, it typically looks like this:

3 months (90 days): approximately 558 – 1,080 PLN

6 months (180 days): approximately 1,116 – 2,160 PLN

This is a good solution for those who want full “A to Z” protection, but you must accept that for a six-month stay, the policy cost becomes a significant budget item.

Local Dominican Plan – Insurance “for Everyday Life” (e.g., Seguros Universal)

The second option for a 3-6 month stay is a local health plan, such as Seguros Universal. This is a solution typically “for living on-site”—medical consultations, tests, ER in the network of facilities, and hospitalization according to local rates. It works well when you treat the Dominican Republic as a temporary home, not just a tourist destination.

Important information: Seguros Universal provides options for foreigners as well. Usually a passport is sufficient, and if you want to purchase a plan for longer than 3 months, it’s best to link a Dominican bank account. For a shorter insurance period, payment through Revolut typically goes through without problems.

Costs are very predictable, as we’re talking about a monthly rate, not a daily one. At an exchange rate of approximately 63 DOP = 1 USD, sample prices in 2025 for one adult look as follows:

Vital: RD$ 2,061 / approx. 33 USD / approx. 120 PLN per month.

Alpha: RD$ 2,645 / approx. 42 USD / approx. 150-155 PLN per month.

Absoluto: RD$ 3,326 / approx. 53 USD / approx. 190-195 PLN per month.

This solution is significantly cheaper in the long term than a Polish travel policy, but you must remember that it operates within the local system—without repatriation to Europe and with settlements according to Dominican standards.

Why Is the “Alpha” Plan Often the Best Choice for Those Wintering?

The Alpha plan is the most frequently chosen option by people wintering in the Dominican Republic. It provides a reasonable balance between price and scope of protection and works well for normal, everyday life on-site.

In short, under Alpha you get, among other things, unlimited medical visits in the network of facilities (with copay), 85% coverage of test costs, 100% coverage of emergencies in the insurer’s network, and hospitalization at 100% according to THM rates, of course within applicable limits. This is complemented by 24/7 telemedicine, access to a psychologist and psychiatrist for up to 30 visits per year, and reimbursements for consultations outside the network (reembolso) up to approximately RD$ 2,500.

As for limits, Alpha looks very reasonable for a local plan. The limit per event (per caso) is RD$ 900,000, which is approximately 14,200 USD, and the catastrophic pool is RD$ 500,000, which is approximately 7,900 USD. For most typical health situations in the Dominican Republic, these amounts are fully sufficient. In terms of costs, the differences are clear. For a 3-6 month stay, Alpha works out as follows:

3 months: approximately 460 PLN;

6 months: approximately 920 PLN.

For comparison, a classic travel policy from Poland costs:

3 months: 558 – 1,080 PLN;

6 months: 1,116 – 2,160 PLN.

The local plan is often significantly cheaper and handles “ordinary life” very well—visits, tests, minor injuries, or sudden infections. Polish travel insurance, on the other hand, wins with “major issues,” meaning very high bills, surgeries, or medical transport to Europe.

5 Questions About Insurance for a Longer Stay in the Dominican Republic

1) Is a Polish policy sufficient for 3-6 months?
Yes, in practice it’s sufficient, but it often turns out to be expensive for a longer stay. Be sure to check the maximum length of a single trip and liability exclusions, such as chronic diseases, sports, diving, or scooters.

2) Can I purchase Seguros Universal as a foreigner?
Yes. Options are available for people from abroad. Usually a passport is sufficient, while for longer-term plans it’s best to have a bank account in the Dominican Republic. For a shorter period, payment through Revolut is often sufficient.

3) What does the Alpha plan cover, and what doesn’t it cover?
Alpha covers treatment in the network of facilities very well: visits, tests, ER, and hospitalization according to local rates. It is not an evacuation policy to Poland, so medical transport and repatriation are better secured with an additional travel policy.

4) What numbers are most important with Alpha?
The two most important things are: price at approximately 150 – 155 PLN per month and limits—RD$ 900,000 per event plus a catastrophic pool of RD$ 500,000.

5) What should I check before purchasing insurance?
Always verify the list of facilities in your area (Bávaro, Bayahibe, Punta Cana), the copay amount, reimbursement rules outside the network (reembolso), any waiting periods, and required documents.

Paweł Bączkowski | +1 (849) 564-6630

pawel@casa-dominicana.com

If you’re flying to the Dominican Republic for two weeks, the topic is simple: you purchase a standard Polish travel insurance policy and you’re all set.
