Entry to the Dominican Republic requires completing an e-ticket<\/strong> \u2013 an electronic form available completely free of charge on the official government website. And this is where the trouble begins, as the internet is full of scammers who impersonate the government portal, demanding fees of up to… $90 per person. These types of websites look quite professional at first glance \u2013 good logo, nice graphics, proper form. Except that behind the scenes lies a simple scam that preys on tourists’ lack of awareness. As a result, many travelers pay for something that can normally be handled independently and without any fees. How not to get scammed? The matter is simple. <\/p>\n\n It’s worth being vigilant right after landing \u2013 at the airport, where you can easily fall into small but costly traps. These may not be classic scams, but if you’re not prepared, you’ll unknowingly leave more money there than you planned. There’s a good chance that right after exiting the arrivals hall, you’ll be “intercepted” by helpful porters<\/strong> who will enthusiastically rush off with your suitcases. The problem is that they often do this without asking, and then… expect a generous tip. Well, help can be useful, especially in heavy crowds, but before you hand over your luggage, establish the terms \u2013 it’s best to clearly ask about the cost of the service. <\/p>\n\n The second trap is airport currency exchange offices<\/strong>. Exchange rates here can be really poor, with high margins and unfavorable conversion rates. If you can, exchange money before departure, or use modern solutions: Revolut card, Zen, ATMs \u2013 these are much more cost-effective options than exchange offices at the gates. Right after exiting the terminal, you can also easily encounter taxi drivers who will rush to help and… often quote unrealistic rates. Sunscreen, medications, hygiene products, snacks… if you bring them from home, you’ll avoid the hotel markup. A good trick is also a small reconnaissance in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Unfortunately, it’s precisely this popularity that scammers exploit, pushing counterfeits disguised as “unique items” onto tourists<\/strong>. And often for really serious money. At first glance, everything looks beautiful \u2013 shiny stones, hand-painted pictures, cigars in wooden boxes… but upon closer inspection, it turns out that “larimar” is ordinary resin, “premium cigars” taste like dried grass, and paintings… well, let’s say not all of them have an artist’s soul. Remember: <\/p>\n\n Best method? Shop at verified locations, preferably recommended by local guides, residents, or hotels. Beach stalls are tempting, but it’s easy to get a “souvenir” there that will turn out to be a disappointment after you return. <\/p>\n\n You’re lying on the beach when suddenly a nice man approaches with a tour offer: Saona, buggy, maybe catamaran? The price is tempting, everything “included,” hotel pickup, lunch, drinks… sounds like a great deal. The problem is that very often this is where the trouble begins. Beach tour vendors operate outside the official circuit<\/strong>, and their offers don’t always match reality. It happens that after paying a deposit, no one comes to pick up tourists, or the tour is completely different from what was promised. Therefore, only use recommended travel agencies, hotel information points, or verified organizers such as Vamos Dominicana<\/a>. Don’t be tempted by price alone \u2013 saving $10-20 can end up costing you $100 or a whole day wasted waiting. <\/p>\n\n You’re walking around aimlessly when a parrot lands on your shoulder, an iguana ends up in your hand, and someone with a wide smile is already snapping photos. Sounds fun? Maybe so \u2013 until you hear: “fifty dollars, my friend!” This is one of the most classic scams in Punta Cana. People with exotic animals hang around beaches and “surprise” tourists<\/strong>, counting on their reaction and lack of reflex. Photos are often taken with your own phone, so it’s hard to say they’re offering any service. And yet \u2013 they try to charge amounts that cry out for justice. Don’t let anyone approach with an animal without asking: if a parrot or iguana lands on your shoulder without consent, simply remove it and refuse the photo. And perhaps most importantly \u2013 think about the animals. They are often kept in poor conditions, serving only as a tool for making money. By supporting such a “business,” we contribute to their exploitation. A photo with a parrot may look nice on Instagram, but a better souvenir will be a selfie with a palm tree \u2013 free, stress-free, and without the participation of a suffering animal. <\/p>\n\n Among the less obvious but very unpleasant scams that can happen to tourists in Punta Cana are fake police officers. These are people impersonating officers who, under the pretext of a routine check \u2013 of documents, luggage, or even “suspicious behavior” \u2013 try to extort cash in the form of an alleged fine or bribe<\/strong>. The scenario often looks like this: someone in uniform (not necessarily complete) stops you, starts talking about irregularities, and after a moment suggests that the matter can be “settled on the spot.” And this is where the problem begins, because a frightened tourist may panic and pay without verifying whether they’re dealing with real law enforcement. What to do then? <\/p>\n\n In theory, Uber is supposed to provide convenient, safe, and transparent transportation \u2013 especially after arriving at the airport. But in practice, in places like Punta Cana, it’s increasingly becoming a tool for scamming tourists. The latest “trick” is the driver canceling the ride and… proposing to continue the journey outside the app, for cash and a much higher price<\/strong>. This practice exploits the fact that many drivers don’t accept certain routes and deliberately cancel orders, then try to make a deal “on the side.” Sometimes the offer seems fair \u2013 but after the ride ends, the amount suddenly increases and the passenger is put against the wall. This phenomenon is so widespread that even Uber’s CEO has drawn attention to the problem of abuse in some countries. Never pay cash outside the app \u2013 if the ride has been canceled, don’t get into the car of a driver who proposes “making a deal.” If such a situation occurs \u2013 refuse, exit the vehicle, and report the incident in the app. After arrival, it’s best to use the official hotel transfer or book transportation in advance through a verified transport company. <\/p>\n\n\n
