A handful of information for Children’s Day

The Dominican Republic is one of the few countries in the region where children are truly seen and heard. High fertility rates and the young age of its inhabitants create a unique demographic landscape: one in five teenage girls becomes a mother here, and the average age of citizens is only 28 years old. On the occasion of Children’s Day, we examine how this youth shapes daily life, the economy, and the investment prospects of the Dominican Republic – because here, the future is not just planned, it’s already running in the streets.

Young Dominican Republic – high fertility rate in the country

The Dominican Republic is a true volcano of youth among Latin American countries – not only does it erupt with the energy of a young society, but demographic statistics confirm this image. The fertility rate in 2025 remains at approximately 2.2 children per woman, which (by today’s standards and European norms) is quite impressive. For comparison, the regional average is only 1.8, and some countries, like Chile or Brazil, are already falling to 1.2-1.6.

What does this mean in practice? That the Dominican Republic is one of those countries where children’s laughter can still be heard in playgrounds, and playgrounds are not empty. It is also a society with potential – the average age is only 28 years, which, compared to, for example, Europe (where many countries exceed 40 years), looks, well… very fresh. From this perspective, it is not surprising that the Dominican Republic attracts the attention of demographers. Because although the fertility rate is slowly falling (as everywhere), the pace of this decline is much gentler than in many developed economies.

You might be interested in: Population of the Dominican Republic – what you need to know?

Early motherhood – a matter of tradition?

One of the main reasons why the Dominican Republic can “boast” a higher fertility rate than most of its neighbors is early motherhood. Imagine – one in five girls aged 15-19 becomes a mother here, so a significant portion of society enters adulthood with an infant in their arms. Why does this happen? Primarily, cultural beliefs and traditions are at play:

deeply rooted family values,

the influence of religion and local customs,

social acceptance of early motherhood.

In many Dominican families, the idea that “a good woman” is one who starts a family early is still deeply rooted. Sometimes this stems from religious values, sometimes from social pressure, and sometimes simply from a lack of educational, economic, or professional alternatives. This phenomenon, on the one hand, builds a young, energetic society; on the other hand, it requires a significant commitment from women at a young age. Although the topic can be sensitive, it cannot be overlooked when discussing childhood and motherhood in the Dominican Republic.

Youth on the rise – a demographic opportunity for the economy

It’s time to look at the other side of the coin – the economy. Although a high fertility rate presents a significant organizational challenge (education, healthcare, etc.), it is also a powerful asset. The Dominican Republic is on the verge of utilizing the so-called demographic dividend – a moment when the majority of society consists of people of working age. And labor force + consumption = economic boom. Young Dominicans are increasingly boldly:

starting families and buying homes,

using educational and healthcare services,

investing in consumer goods,

entering the labor market…

…and generally driving everything that can be driven. This is why, among other things, the construction industry in the country is thriving – in cities like Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, and Santiago, new housing developments are springing up like mushrooms after rain. Apartments, schools, kindergartens – all of this needs to be built, equipped, and serviced.

You might be interested in: Is the Dominican Republic a safe country to live in?

Full-time education – how is the Dominican Republic investing in children?

The Dominican government is not idle – since it is known that there are many children in the country, it is necessary to ensure they have real opportunities for a better future. And here comes a whole series of concrete actions, led by the educational reform “Jornada Escolar Extendida”. This is a serious matter – we are talking about a full-day schooling system that not only extended the time spent in school but also… added a free lunch. Seemingly a small detail, but in practice – a huge convenience, especially for children from poorer families.

The effects? Hundreds of new schools are already ready to welcome students, and thousands of teachers have found employment thanks to this. And this is just the beginning. The government is not stopping at education alone – social programs have also been launched, such as “Supérate”, which operates on the principle: if you want financial support, your child must attend school and have access to healthcare. Clever, as it fights poverty at its root, with an eye to the future, rather than just putting out fires.

Dominican Republic at a turning point… but in a good direction

Although there are many demographic challenges (and no one pretends it’s perfect here), the situation is not spiraling out of control. On the contrary – the fertility rate is gradually and predictably decreasing, without sudden drops. This means that the country has time to prepare for the inevitable: the transition to a more sustainable development model. What’s more, investments in education, health, and social infrastructure, which we wrote about earlier, are not for show. These are actual foundations for something bigger – a social transformation in which the young population will not just be a number in statistics, but a real driving force for change.

And this is where the strength of the Dominican Republic lies. Because if the energy of a young society – with its potential, ambition, and fresh perspective – can be wisely harnessed, we will get a ready recipe for more than just GDP growth. The demographic situation in the Dominican Republic proves that it is a country with a future – literally. A young society, growing demand, and stable development are signals that it is worth investing here: especially in sectors such as real estate, education, and consumer services.

Visit Casa Dominicana and see for yourself that investing in exotic real estate is worthwhile.

Andrzej Włodarski | +48 782 942 023

The Dominican Republic is one of the few countries in the region where children are truly seen and heard.
