Before you drop everything and buy a one-way ticket, read up on what it entails. Where to look for employment, which industries are easiest to get into, how much you can earn, and whether it can be managed legally without a headache? The Dominican Republic is a place where you can live and work normally – if you approach it correctly.

Where to Find Work in the Dominican Republic?

If you are wondering where in the Dominican Republic it is best to look for work, the answer will not be a surprise – tourist regions dominate. You will find the most offers in places such as Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Bávaro, or Bayahibe. The capital is the country’s business center – there are international companies, offices, call centers, and many opportunities if you know languages. Punta Cana and its surroundings are classic – hotels, restaurants, resorts – everything related to tourist services. Bayahibe is quieter, but work in tourism and real estate can also be found, especially if you have good people skills and know several languages.

For Poles, the most frequently available positions are in gastronomy (e.g., chefs, waiters), tourism (tour leaders, guides, excursion coordinators), and real estate sales (agents, developer representatives, property managers). According to 2024 data, over 5 million people are already working in the country, and unemployment has fallen to 5.3% – the best result in years. However, it is important to remember the formalities: legal work means obtaining a visa and a permit, and this process can take some time (even several months), so it is worth preparing in advance.

Most Desirable Industries and Professions in the Dominican Republic

Tourism and hospitality are clear leaders. In 2024, this sector employed approximately 750,000 people, accounting for 11.5% of formal private sector employment. Guides, animators, receptionists, and gastronomic staff are in demand.

Real estate is another rapidly growing sector. The increase in foreign investment in real estate, especially in tourist regions, drives demand for real estate agents, property managers, and customer service specialists.

Remote work is gaining popularity thanks to the growing digital infrastructure and a young, technically savvy society. The Dominican Republic invests in education and technology development, which fosters the growth of the IT sector, digital marketing, and online customer service.

How Much Do You Earn in the Dominican Republic? Realistic Salaries

Earnings in the Dominican Republic can vary greatly – everything depends on the industry, experience, and whether you work locally or as an expat. In tourism, which is one of the country’s main sources of income, the average salary for a hotel employee or receptionist is approximately 25,000-30,000 Dominican pesos per month (which is roughly 420-500 USD). Chefs and waiters can expect similar rates, although tips significantly boost income. In real estate, salaries are higher – experienced agents can earn up to 700,000 DOP annually (12,000 USD), but of course, they also earn additional commissions. It is worth noting that the main model of work in agencies is commission-only remuneration without a so-called basic monthly salary. For comparison: many expats, especially those employed in international companies or working remotely, aim for earnings of at least 1,500 USD per month. And rightly so: with current living costs, this is usually enough to live comfortably and not scrutinize every penny (or rather – peso) spent.

How to Work Legally in the Dominican Republic – Documents and Formalities

To start legal work in the Dominican Republic, you must first obtain a work visa (Visa de Negocios con Fines Laborales) at the Dominican consulate in your country. Required documents include: a valid passport (minimum 18 months validity), an employment contract with a Dominican employer, a certificate of no criminal record, a health certificate, and passport photos. The visa fee is approximately 200 USD.

Upon arrival in the Dominican Republic, within 30 days, you should register with the General Directorate of Migration (Dirección General de Migración – DGM) and apply for a temporary work permit (Permiso de Trabajo Temporal – PTT). Required documents include: a copy of your passport, an employment contract, a certificate of no criminal record, a health certificate, and photos. The cost of obtaining a work permit is approximately 7,000 DOP (120 USD), and an additional fee for medical examinations is approximately 6,300 DOP (106 USD).

The entire process of obtaining a visa and work permit takes 2 to 4 months. The permit is valid for one year and can be extended for another 365 days if the employment contract is also extended. Why all this? Working in the Dominican Republic without proper documents can result in a fine, deportation, and loss of the right to legal employment in the future. So, it is better not to forget anything.

In Summary…

Working in the Dominican Republic is quite a reasonable life option. Most activity is in tourism, gastronomy, and real estate, so if you have people skills and know languages, you will quickly find your place here. Earnings for locals can be modest, but as an expat, especially in remote work or an international company, you can easily earn enough to live at a proverbial “good standard.” Just do not forget the formalities: visa, work permit, some paperwork… but once you take care of it, all that awaits you is work with a relaxing view of palm trees.

Andrzej Włodarski | +48 782 942 023

Do you dream of working in the Dominican Republic?
