An important element in the context of imports and exports is the country’s infrastructure. The Dominican Republic has 8 international airports, 6 domestic airports, 16 international seaports, and over 60 free trade zones.<\/strong> As a result, this country reaches over 900 million consumers worldwide and has the most air and sea connections in the Caribbean region.<\/p>\n\n The Dominican government has signed numerous trade agreements with countries in the region, the United States, and European countries, which facilitates free trade expansion. The Dominican Republic exports mainly food, construction materials, beverages, chemical products, industrial products, gold, copper, and specialized medical instruments. The Dominican Republic’s most important trading partners are the United States, Canada, Haiti, Puerto Rico, China, India, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands. <\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n\n Export data comes from the records of the General Directorate of Customs (DGA \u2013 Direcci\u00f3n General de Aduanas). Analyzing data for the first half of 2023 and 2024, a slight increase of 3.1%<\/strong> is evident, which translates to an additional $189 million. In 2024, the Dominican Republic exported products to 140 countries worldwide.<\/strong> <\/p>\n <\/p>\n\n Free trade zones dominate Dominican exports, which results from the lack of taxation on articles produced there. They accounted for 67.2% of all exports, while domestic products accounted for 30.4%. Export by sea reached 67% of total value, however road transport decreased by 19.6% due to the unstable situation in Haiti, which is one of the main recipients of Dominican goods. Air transport increased by 9.5% and accounted for 26.8% of exports. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n\n Among the most frequently exported products were medical instruments, gold, and cigars. Other exported goods include electronic devices and jewelry<\/strong>. The total value of exports in the first half of 2024 amounted to over $2.5 billion, which represents 40.8% of all shipped products, although this represents a decrease of $266 million compared to the first half of 2023. <\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n\n The majority of Dominican goods went to the United States, Haiti, Switzerland, India, the Netherlands, China, Germany, Spain, Jamaica, and Belgium<\/strong>. In most cases, exports to these countries increased, and 87.7% of total exports were directed to the aforementioned ten countries. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n\n As an island country, the Dominican Republic is forced to import a large quantity of products, which generates higher costs associated with sea and air transport. As a result, the value of imports exceeds the value of exports by more than twofold. In the first half of 2024, imports amounted to $14.528 billion<\/strong>, which represents a slight, less than 1% increase compared to the same period of the previous year. Exports would cover only 43.6% of the value of imports. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n\n Foreign products accounted for 82.1% of imports<\/strong>, and the rest came from free trade zones. The Dominican Republic imports mainly by sea (88%), while air transport accounted for 11.9%. Road transport decreased by 23.2% compared to the previous year, which is related to the situation in Haiti. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n\n Among the most frequently imported goods were fuels, passenger vehicles, gases and hydrocarbons, medicines, and engine oils.<\/strong> These five product categories cost the Dominican Republic $3.5 billion, or 25% of total imports. Nearly half of imported goods are consumer products. The Dominican Republic imports goods from 179 countries, but 79.1% of all imports come from ten main trading partners. The largest of these is the United States, which accounts for nearly half of the total value of imports. The next positions are occupied by China, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Japan. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n\n The potential of this region is increasingly appreciated by the European Union as well, which is creating, among other things, the Global Gateway program supporting EU entrepreneurs in these markets. <\/p>\n\n Despite the gradually growing interest of Polish companies in cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries, significant reserves remain in developing trade and investment relations in the markets of this region. My experience indicates that the primary barrier is not financial or logistical issues, but above all excessive concerns and poor knowledge of the specifics of the countries in this region<\/strong>. Consequently, the potential offered by Latin American and Caribbean markets is not fully utilized by Polish companies. Entrepreneurs from other EU countries do not have such concerns and successfully develop export and investment expansion in Latin American and Caribbean markets. <\/p>\n\n Many myths circulate about the countries of this region.<\/strong> One often encounters the view that these are distant countries (in reality, decidedly closer than Far Eastern countries) or the allegedly high cost of freight (in reality, at the level of transport costs to China and neighboring countries). Very often, the phenomena of crime (especially drug-related) or corruption are exaggerated to enormous proportions. But one of the most frequently encountered (and most harmful) stereotypes is the virtually universal treatment of all these countries as a uniform set of Spanish-speaking countries and failure to notice the differences between them. This promotes the transfer of various pejorative media phenomena and negative experiences in contacts with a specific entrepreneur from a specific country to the entire region. The reality is diametrically different.
