In today’s blog, I will try to share my impressions of the western part of this wonderful country, specifically the furthest protruding peninsula of this island, commonly called the Barahona Peninsula. Reading guidebooks about this region, I didn’t realize how beautiful and at the same time how wild this region is. I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that this is a place that will surprise even the most demanding tourists. Here you’ll find everything from stunning beaches to mountains descending to the Caribbean Sea. <\/h4>\n\n

We started our journey from the country’s capital, Santo Domingo. Our first destination, Punta Salinas, is a cape separating Las Calderas Bay from Ocoa Bay. The hallmark of this place are the gray, high dunes (Dunas de Ban\u00ed) stretching from Matanzas to Las Salinas, recognized as a natural monument. Some tourists may be amazed by the sight of seemingly “snow-covered” dune peaks. This is because in Las Salinas, salt is obtained through seawater evaporation. At the end of the cape, there is an old but very atmospheric salt works. The area has a mysterious atmosphere. The beaches here are covered with dark, coarse-grained sand. With good visibility, standing at the end of the cape, you can see the Barohuco mountain range in the distance. <\/p>\n\n

Our next destination was the town of Barahona. Heading west, we had the opportunity to pick up a Dominican soldier hitchhiking, who spoke in superlatives about the local people, food, and nature. We arrived in the city late in the evening, so we didn’t have much opportunity to explore it. However, we can tell you that the sunrises here are incredible. It’s worth getting up early in the morning to enjoy this spectacle. Nature comes to life, and with it the Dominicans, who set out early in the morning to fish and catch seafood. Believe me, they taste incredible. <\/p>\n\n

Early in the morning we headed south. The road runs along the picturesque coastline. On one side you can admire the incredible color of the Caribbean Sea water, and on the other the mountain massif where the endemic Larimar stone is mined. Speaking of the water color, it most likely comes from the seabed, which consists of white stones, giving it an incredible color. It is so mesmerizing that you can admire it for hours. Every dozen or so kilometers we passed small towns that transport you to another dimension. I had the impression that time has stopped here. People are not rushing anywhere. <\/h5>\n\n

Each of these towns has a beach. A characteristic feature is that they are rocky. It should also be noted that the waves here are somewhat larger. This is definitely an ideal place for people practicing water sports. Tourism is not as developed here as in the eastern part of the island, however, at each beach there is a local shop and a fish fry. You can taste the best of the Dominican Republic there and cool down with a cold Presidente, which is plentiful here. <\/p>\n\n

The next stop was Lake Oviedo, which has three times the salinity of the Caribbean Sea. Due to limestone deposits and the algae found in it, the lake has a yellow-greenish color. You can encounter pelicans and pink flamingos here. We learned all this from a local girl who was happy to tell us about the local nature. <\/p>\n\n

The icing on the cake was the Bay of Eagles (Bah\u00eda de las \u00c1guilas). It is located in Jaragua National Park. It is characterized by a desert climate. The water in this area is crystal clear, there are very few tourists on the beach. In addition, within 30 kilometers there is no infrastructure here, except for a non-functioning airport where a cow was wandering around. You sleep here in tents, but not just any tents. These are tents equipped with comfortable beds, electrical outlets, and fans. For those who value comfort, there are wooden cabins. The advantage of the tents, however, is that they are located right on the beach. In the early morning, you just need to open the tent to admire the sunrise. <\/h5>\n\n

The Pedernales Peninsula is not a popular place in the Dominican Republic. However, I believe it is a place that will positively surprise everyone. It is certainly a departure from the well-known Punta Cana. It is equally beautiful, and what’s more, it shows us the Dominican Republic that has not been touched by man. I won’t lie if I say it was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. See for yourself the photos we took. They don’t capture what it’s really like there. You have to go there to understand it. To sum up the slogan of the local Ministry of Tourism, the Dominican Republic has it all! <\/p>\n\n
