Here are my subjective ten reasons why it’s worth considering this Caribbean paradise as a place for “wintering.”
Land of Eternal Summer
Weather in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has a tropical climate, meaning the sun shines here all year round. Temperatures rarely drop below 25 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal place for those who want to avoid a frosty winter. Temperatures also rarely exceed 30 degrees before 10:00 AM and after 5:00 PM, which are the hours when we typically work, or at least try to, resisting the charms of the Dominican Republic.
Affordable Prices
The cost of living in the Dominican Republic is significantly lower than in many European countries or North America. From food to rent, one can live comfortably here without spending a fortune. Okay, if you’re from a smaller town and Warsaw always seemed expensive to you, then Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, or other popular expat hubs here won’t help you live frugally. It’s important to remember that the Dominican Republic is practically an island, as it’s hard to call Haiti a proper country today. Consequently, many everyday products simply have to be imported. However, this does not change the fact that after a few weeks of living here, everyone will start finding places and products that fit their budget.
Modern Healthcare
In recent years, investments in the Dominican Republic’s healthcare sector have led to an influx of doctors and technology, which is crucial for the elderly or those who require regular medical care. To give an example, my wife, my almost 2-year-old daughter, and I (42 years old) pay 3200 PLN for 5 months of insurance coverage up to half a million PLN with a leading insurer. This is “worldwide” insurance, meaning it also covers us if we fly to Mexico, Colombia, or the USA, for instance. We know how this insurance works because, unfortunately, we’ve had occasion to use it. One call to the Polish emergency number, and within an hour, a doctor from a nearby hospital was at our apartment. Within an hour. An English-speaking pediatric specialist, because we had to call a doctor for Marysia. Fortunately, it was nothing serious.
Welcoming Communities:
The island is famous for its warm and friendly residents who welcome expats and tourists with open arms. Many communities are already well-adapted to the needs of visitors, offering both local attractions and amenities familiar from home. Besides the fact that Dominicans are accustomed to a large number of tourists, they are simply a hard-working nation focused on their own destiny. They do not have the mentality characteristic of other Central American countries, where a tourist or a person with lighter skin is “automatically” a target. Okay, at first, you always pay the “Gringo TAX,” meaning more because you don’t know the language or local customs, so sometimes a local might overcharge us, but these are pennies compared to how much our native vendors and the very country we are emigrating from for autumn and winter can overcharge us.
Safety
The Dominican Republic is considered one of the safest places in the Caribbean. Of course, as anywhere in the world, basic precautions should be taken, but generally speaking, you can enjoy a peaceful life here, whether you’re on a short vacation, staying for several months, or deciding to live here. Recreational Opportunities
What to do in the Dominican Republic? The Dominican Republic offers tourist attractions from sunbathing to diving to fishing – the possibilities are almost limitless. The Dominican Republic also offers a rich cultural and historical life, with numerous festivals and historical sites. It would take a long time to list them all, as everyone has their own passions, hobbies, or interests. For those who want to be more active here, we have diverse terrain, so road cycling, swimming, and water sports, with diving at the forefront, are available. There are fitness clubs and martial arts gyms, basketball courts, tennis courts, and padel courts. We can play golf, polo, or football. Once you get to know the area a bit, there are quite a few places where you can spend your free time.
There are also plenty of offers for fans in flip-flops. There are many sports bars, as Americans and Canadians like to cheer on their idols in front of the screen.

Many of them offer additional amenities such as swimming pools, access to private beaches, or fitness centers, which will enhance your stay and ensure maximum comfort.
Prices are also at a decent level. Property prices in the Dominican Republic, as well as rents, have increased in recent years, but they are still at a good level considering that summer lasts here every day, all year round.

The Dominican Republic is easily accessible thanks to international airports that offer direct flights to many cities worldwide. This makes coming here for a longer stay convenient and hassle-free. Recently, the budget airline AraJet has also started operating, making it cheaper than before to fly to neighboring countries. It’s worth remembering that the Dominican Republic is only a 2-hour flight from Miami. There are many options for a weekend getaway. Jamaica is a 2.5-hour flight, Orlando, Panama, and Colombia are also less than 3 hours away.
However, if we decide not to fly out of the Dominican Republic during this entire period, we have the option of, among other things, renting a car and traveling on our own or taking optional excursions in the Dominican Republic, which will provide experiences that would often be difficult to organize ourselves.
Diversity of Landscapes
What to see in the Dominican Republic? Saona, Samana, Santo Domingo – the list of must-see places is long. From mountain peaks to tropical beaches, the Dominican Republic offers an incredible diversity of landscapes. You can find a perfect place for yourself here, whether you prefer the tranquility of the mountains or the sound of the waves. Much could be written about this. The Dominican Republic wins or is at the forefront of many rankings that score the best countries to spend the cold season or retirement. The fact that the country has so many faces helps the Dominican Republic achieve high rankings.
Access to Services
In the capital or, for example, Punta Cana, we have a really wide selection of service providers and a relatively competitive market. There is no shortage of hypermarkets or specialists. We can buy, rent, and repair a car. There are excellent private schools, nannies, chefs, and support if we need someone to look after the house. Just ask Poles who have lived here longer, and you will surely find what you are looking for.
Spending autumn and winter in the Dominican Republic is not just an escape from the cold. It’s an opportunity to experience a new culture, make new acquaintances, and enjoy life in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, which is also relatively well-developed and safe.
