The history of this place begins in 1874, when Juan Brito from Puerto Rico established a small fishing settlement here. Over the years, the place developed slowly, maintaining its local character. Instead of large investments and rapid development, everything happened at its own pace – calmly, without haste, as if time flowed differently. Today, more than 5,500 people live here (according to 2022 data), but despite growing tourist interest, Bayahibe has not lost its authentic atmosphere. You can still encounter fishermen returning from their catch, elderly ladies sitting in the shade of palm trees, and children playing by the beach – and it is precisely this everyday life, not polished for tourists, that gives the place its unique charm.
Bayahibe and Dominicus – comfort and tranquility
Bayahibe and Dominicus may not have the grandeur of Punta Cana, but they offer something that is priceless to many – more space, fewer crowds, and an authentic Caribbean atmosphere. Although only a few kilometers separate them, Bayahibe and Dominicus are two completely different worlds. In the evenings, you can hear music here, locals play dominoes in front of the colmado (the local equivalent of a convenience store), and street life goes on without haste. Although the atmosphere is still very Caribbean, the town is developing – new apartments are being built, and the infrastructure is keeping up with the times.
Dominicus is a slightly different story – more organized, modern, heavily inspired by European and American style. The center of everything is Avenida Eladia – the main street with bars, live music, pharmacies, shops, and service points. A few steps away is Dominicus Village – a small center with a café, pizzeria, gym, and casino, very popular with the Italian community, which has firmly settled in this area.
Bayahibe also attracts diving enthusiasts. The Scuba Dominicana center operates here, where training is provided by, among others, Leszek Gimel – a Pole with many years of experience. The surrounding waters hide not only reefs and wrecks but also underwater sculptures and monuments, and in the nearby National Park, you can even explore caves – of course, only for more advanced divers. When it comes to everyday life and investments, a lot is happening in both towns. The route may not be easy, but the views are priceless.
The park itself is also more than just a forest. It is one of the most ecologically valuable places in the entire Dominican Republic. You can encounter endemic animal species, rare plants, and hidden among the dense trees are natural caves. Some allow only a short cooling stop, but there are also those where you can swim or even dive. It is precisely this mix – of sea, jungle, and raw nature – that makes Bayahibe and Dominicus offer more than just a lounge chair and a drink with an umbrella.
